Thanksgiving in the Tetons

November was a busy month for us. Since Jackson Hole is only an 8-hour drive, we decided to head up for Thanksgiving, shortly after returning from Napa and Tahoe.

We had heard the Tetons were splendid and different than the mountains we have in Colorado. And, visiting in-between peak seasons (not quite ski season, but still enough snowfall to close sections of the park), we were excited to hike and take in all of the views.

We made the easy drive on Thanksgiving Day and immediately drove to the base of the Tetons. The weather was overcast, so clouds covered the peaks on the mountain-tops. We took it all in however, as it was still gorgeous. We then headed back in town to pick up some ingredients to make green chili for our Thanksgiving dinner. Well, we soon realized that most stores closed after 5pm on Thanksgiving Day, as they should, so we ended up at Kmart, which only has a canned goods aisle. I was rather irritated, however we rallied and got some ingredients for Kent's famous Tuna Noodle Casserole, and I got a package of mac-n-cheese as a backup. Well, the casserole left a lot to be desired so mac-n-cheese it was! While the dinner was a bust, we enjoyed our cozy VRBO find and watched The Holiday (one of our favorite seasonal movies!). While this place was not in Jackson Hole exactly, it was just a short drive away. And, if the park had been open, it was extremely close to the Moose Wilson entrance.

Day 2 view of the mountains!

We took the next two days to explore the area (with clear skies), and what was open of the park. At this time of year, some areas of the park are closed, specifically the northern part, and we were unable to make the short trip to Yellowstone since the only open entrance was more than 5 hours away.

We walked around some of the shops in Jackson Hole, enjoyed a local coffee shop (Cowboy Coffee) and book store (Valley Book Store Inc), found some yummy Asian food (Teton Tiger) and of course, craft beer. We enjoyed a rather large flight and some good food at Snake River Brewing after walking through the park.

It was a great area, and while it was a bit pricy, it was still reasonable for a long weekend, especially during that time of year. The next time we visit, we'll definitely go when it's warmer to take advantage of the close proximity to Yellowstone. However, during this time of year, with what is open, our Thanksgiving vacation was perfect.
